An Introduction to Spoken Poetry

Hey y'all!Apologies for the absence - as some of you may know, I have issues with my immune system so my health has been a problem recently. It’s National Poetry Month which is exciting to me because I’m such a poetry dork. Previously, I’ve only been able to post during my Top Ten Tuesday related to poetry. If you follow me on Twitter, I tend to tweet (a lot of) poems day-to-day but they can get a little scattered. I talked in my introduction to the month post about how this is going to work on the blog: I’m spotlighting a genre of poetry a week, as classified by yours truly. I tend to divide poetry into three categories: classical, spoken, and contemporary poetry. This week? Spoken. You might be into spoken poetry if

  • you find yourself inexplicably drawn to black coffee and wander into little hole-in-the-wall cafes to find an assortment of poets writhing on the stage
  • you like to rhyme or use lots of puns
  • you like really long, really elaborate rants or soliloquies with plenty of metaphors (especially if you love theater)
  • two words: rap music

Spoken poetry is relaxed, but still unbelievably beautiful. It's easy to connect emotionally with the poets, and it's more performance-based than anything else. It recalls not only words, but gestures and acting and the resonance of the poets as people. It can go so much more deeply into explorations with synesthesia and a few of my favorite writing tricks. (It also deals a lot more with social issues and can have some curse words so just a heads up - don't want anybody to be offended!) It's a lot harder for me to find spoken poets that I like, but when I do, I'm head-over-heels. I hope y'all love the poems I've rounded together!
