A deadly love triangleElena: beautiful and popular, the girl who can have any guy she wants.Stefan: brooding and mysterious, desperately trying to resist his desire for Elena . . . for her own good.Damon: sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him.Elena finds herself drawn to both brothers . . . who will she choose?Okay, this description is terrible. I try not to summarize books in my reviews because I just like to say my thoughts on them. If you want a good description, I suggest either going to L.J's website or watch the pilot of Vampire Diaries (the TV show).I liked this book but wasn't crazy about it. One of the reasons is because Elena is very unlikable . For a girl whose parents have died, you'd think that she'd be more considerate of other people's feelings, not use them, and not only care about popularity or what guy she wants. It was very disappointing for me that she was the protagonist.I liked Stefan, but he wasn't the heart-throb that I was expecting. Granted, I did watch the pilot of the TV show before I read the book, but the TV show is way better. I do also try to make a point of not comparing a book to a video but I did not like the characters. The relationships were slightly flawed. Bonnie was energetic and high-maintenance and Caroline was desperate and a nemesis of Elena. It reminded me of the Clique minus brand names and plus vampires. It slightly bummed me, but I did buy the second because I thought that maybe I had gotten a wrong first impression.I did like the action and different elements tossed into this book and it was okay, but wasn't as amazing as I was expecting. If you want my suggestion, watch the TV shows. This is one of the rare instances in which the show is better than the books. Even with Pretty Little Liars, the books are better than the show. Although, I am seriously addicted to the Vampire Diaries TV show. I mean ADDICTED.Anyways, this is an okay book that I couldn't decide whether I liked or hated. I hated the characters and the slowness of the plot but I did like the original idea and the writing style. Different twists were constantly introduced. But my only problem is that nobody wants to read a book where they hate the main characters.Recommended for anybody who loves: Twilight; Beautiful Darkness; vampire books; The Sky Is Everywhere (strangely enough, this reminded me of this book); etc,.Possible book club questions:Why are people always so interested in the "new kid"? In a lot of books, the love interest is one who is introduced as having just come to the school and/or community. Discuss. Why do you think that Stefan is drawn towards a site harboring so many memories? Name several circumstances in which a person decides to return to a place where something terrible has happened.Elena is quite rude. Why do you think that she would have adopted this personality even after her parents died? For the TV show, there was a lot of controversy on the fact that Nina Dobrev's hair is not blond. Why do you think that this mattered so much to the fans of the books? How well do you think that the book has been translated to film?
