In this coming-of-age story set in a medieval kingdom, Andrea is a headstrong princess longing to be a knight who finds her way to modern-day California. But her accidental return to her family's kingdom and a disastrous romance brings war, along with her discovery of some dark family secrets. Readers will love this mix of traditional fantasy elements with unique twists and will identify with Andrea and her difficult choices between duty and desire.

Andrea's desire for independence is one we can all relate to and her tomboyish personality is wonderfully refreshing. The world that Ferreiro-Esteban has created is old-fashioned where everything is set in stone; it is fascinatung to watch the protaganist struggle to find her place in the required roles that a lady- no less a princess- must have. The first half, I must admit, was very slow. The speech seemed forced and she seemed overwhelmed and petulant. However, in the second half of the book, Andrea grew and the plot became engrossing. It was filled with action relating to her stubborn mission to save her kingdom and herself. Manuevering her way through love, family, loss, and the stress of growing up, Andrea is very likeable towards the end of the book, proving to the reader that she can grow up and be mature.I liked her amused bewilderment at the wonders of our world: I thought that that was fresh and entertaining. I loved the blossoming romance towards the end of the book. This book was overall solidly good. The plot was pretty good, the writing was okay, and the depth of the characters was great. I loved seeing Andrea mature and Don Julian develop as a character. This book is recommended for anybody who loves: fantasy, other worlds, romance, princess stories, independence, tomboy heroines.Possible book club questions:Can you identify with Andrea's struggle for independence?Do you think she matured throughout the book? How do you think so?If you came to our world from a different one, what marvels of technology would you be amazed at?
