Tune In's a monthly-or-so column for me to share what I'm listening to (and sometimes watching.) I hope you find a few new favorites.

Hey y'all!

I'm easing out of book revisions, which means my listening history for the last month-plus has been a whole lot of Hozier, The Lumineers, Noah Kahan, etc,. My Mountain Sounds playlist has — you got it — a lot of mountain music. Still, I'm at least obsessively listening to a few other songs on repeat, so figured I'd share.

Burgundy Soul

Lots of Mahalia, Teddy Swims, Hozier, etc,. Rhythmic, soulful, R&B, etc,. I don't know why, but I definitely see red (but like burgundy red, not anger) when listening to these. They're very cooking-at-night, candlelit, modern-romance sizzle to me. There's also some grrrr-style girl power on there which is a fun vibe.

Notable Songs:

  • Good Company — Mahalia
  • Empire Now — Hozier
  • I Just Want a Lover — Noah Cyrus
  • Like a Prayer (Live) — Miley Cyrus
  • Let It Be — Aretha Franklin
  • Too Well — Renee Rapp
AUG 2024

The Shazam'd hits and various fixations. Including Tate McRae (I dig her concert footage), various snippets from The Vampire Diaries soundtrack, a few folk songs, and a rediscovered favorite or two. I listened to a lot of really good, really sad music while revising the "Dark Night of the Soul" portions of my book, so I have to be a little careful not to let the more emo songs sink into my mood.

Notable Songs:

  • The Former — Steinza
  • Lover of Mine — John Vincent III
  • guilty conscience — Tate McRae
  • Stolen Seasons — Hazlett
  • Stay (Live) — I AM LAVANS
  • Need the Sun to Break — James Bay

Black Island 2024

This shared family playlist has some country, some oldies, some modern singer-songwriters. Above all, the type of music we'll listen to while grilling out with rosé during the golden hour. Lakeside, sunscreen-y, rinsing in the outdoor shower.

Notable Songs:

  • There's Your Trouble — The Chicks
  • I Run to You — Lady A
  • Solo — Myles Smith
  • Lose Control — Teddy Swims
  • I'd Rather Go Blind — Etta James
  • We Chanting — Kealamauloa Alcon
