What I Listened to This July

Tune In's a monthly-or-so column for me to share what I'm listening to (and sometimes watching.)

I haven't done this in quite a while, apologies, likely because I haven't been listening to all that much music. I'm rarely driving, have been grinding to the same songs, and just (perhaps) haven't been all that interesting. But, as much as I've loved peppering Words Like Silver with handfuls of book reviews, I'd like to fold in some more lifestyle again.

I've been drifting towards angsty femme ballads, apparently.

Some Connections:

• I've had an admiration of Suki Waterhouse's entire vibe since watching her in the Daisy Jones & the Six adaptation, so that tracks.
• Bad Things is stolen from the ending of Heated Rivalry, the hockey series that overtook the cultural wave last December. Been in love with it ever since.
• I'm dying to learn plus tôt on piano, as it got me to read Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects, a piercing Southern Gothic mystery centering family dysfunction.

Some Audiobooks

I'm deeply picky about audiobook narrators in that I usually like my narrators male and accented whereas most books are not. Especially in YA fiction, I find a frustrating tendency to assign voices that are ditzy even when the subject matter is not. While driving down from Canada, I listened to a few:

• Summer's Never Over by Darcy Bozeman — narrated by Carlotta Brentan — I alternated between print and audio here.
• Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater — narrated by Will Patton — An atmospheric Appalachian grounded fantasy, better on audio (in my opinion) that I listen to repeatedly for its line-level work. Tradition at this point.
• The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider — narrated by Dan Jon Miller — Like Looking for Alaska meets The Great Gatsby(ish) meets Jamie's narration from A Study in Charlotte: light, bittersweet, expansive coming-of-age with a Manic Pixie Dream girl and a senior reevaluating his final year in the wake of a career-ending injury.
